Are you ready??

Posted July 19th, 2007 under Clara and Libby, Mothering by MicheleP.

Today I took the “Is your toddler ready to be toilet trained” quiz and after a series of affirmative responses, my ever so intuitive guide is quick to tell me…

Bring on the potty chair!

Congratulations: Your child is ready to begin toilet training. She is emotionally, physically and cognitively ready to take on this exciting new challenge. Here are some signs that indicate she’s raring to go:

She understands the need to “go” and can communicate this to you before she actually goes.

She has nighttime control over her bowel movements.

She demonstrates imitative behavior.

She dislikes wet or dirty diapers.

She is able to stay dry for at least two hours or wakes up dry after a nap.

She is able to pull elastic waist pants up and down.”

That’s just great. FAN-tastic. Really, I’m super excited. If I was any more excited, I might just pee MY pants. But you see, they forgot the MOST important question of all…

What? You think I might be tired of diapers and can’t wait to hop on this train? Nope. Nada. Negatory. No thanks. Not one stinkin’ bit. So it just ain’t happening yet – this train is staying at the station for a bit longer.

Besides, they are having too much fun changing each other – can’t stop that party now, can I?

Ain’t that the truth! I’m never ever ready. I’m thinking packing their stuff for college with a brand new package of big girl panties is not at all unreasonable. Surely by then they could just figure it out themselves. ;-)

Yeah, but what mom ain’t tellin’ ya is that they have actually started potty-training themselves. Definitely an endorsement for her self-dubbed, “The Laid Back Approach”. It seems so many methods teach parents how to “do it” in one, three, 5 days… when sometimes the “gentle nudge” approach may work just fine. Right sweetie?

[...] It’s been a crazy week at our place – lots of drama, activity and excitement…because somewhere in the middle of “I’m not ready and she is,” Libs decided to potty train herself. Yep, that’s right – the kid just started using the potty ON HER OWN. We are on day 3 of being totally dry…and we aren’t even wearing pull-ups. [...]
