Update on Omar – and very little water

Posted October 16th, 2008 under Around the house, Life, Puerto Rico by MicheleP.

Thankfully Omar went East and left the majority of Puerto Rico unharmed. We got a little rain – not even that much – and for that very little water, I’m very thankful.

However, we seem to have another little water problem…

The past few days, I’ve noticed the cistern going off quite frequently. Usually it goes off when we are pulling in a lot of water (like doing dishes and taking a shower or washing clothes) but it was going off when a faucet was turned on. Odd, no?

Well, in the event Omar hit us and we lost power, I wanted to make sure I was caught up on all washing - probably doing at least 6 loads of clothes yesterday…and making sure kids were nice & clean…and dishes washed, etc. Then late last night, when I went to get some water there was just a little trickle. Hmmm. Maybe they turned down the pressure in advance of the hurricane?

So this morning we get up and try again – and just a little trickle comes out. Scott calls a neighbor and asks him – he says that pressure did seem to be a little low last night but today was fine. Scott fiddled around with it for a while and then called our plumber to come out and take a look.

Juan comes out this afternoon, climbs up on the roof and checks things out and then back down and tells me “Your cistern is totally empty.”

We have a 1,000 gallon cistern. So clearly this problem did not just occur last night or even yesterday – it’s been going on for a few days for us to drain a 1,000 gallon cistern.

Juan continues to poke around and goes out to the water (valve?) at the street. Digs around in there for a while and comes back in and asks me, “Have you paid your water bill?”

Me: “Yes – I have it set to pay automatically each month.”

Juan: “Hmmm. Are you up to date with your homeowner’s dues?”

Me: “Yes – they are paid for the year. Why are you asking?”

Juan: “Because your water was shut off.”

Me: “Huh? What? Who did that?”

Of course Juan doesn’t know who did it or why. I pulled up my last bill to just make sure I didn’t imagine seeing it go through my online bill payer – and sure enough it was paid – all $39 and change of it.

Juan: “Was that your whole bill?”

Me: “Yes – that was it. Is something wrong with it?”

Juan: “Well, that is just low. REALLY low.”

Now that I think of it, my bill is always $39 something - which I thought was odd, but figured they did a true-up at the end of the year or something. I just always pay the amount billed and haven’t questioned anything.

Until now.

Juan turns the water back on and tells me it will take several hours for the cistern to fill back up. I pay him for the service call and he is on his way.

Then I start to get a little worried.

I pay the bills each month and we haven’t gotten any notices saying they are late or short or anything.  So who turned off our water? And I’m curious – just how low are my bills?

So I call a friend in the neighborhood. She tells me that her bills are usually the same for several months in a row and then she will get an adjusted one and then back to the same. Ok, so maybe they just haven’t read my meter in a long time. So I ask, “Do you mind me asking how much your water bill is?”

“Oh anywhere between $150 and $250.”

Gulp. I think my stomach just did a little backflip. Oh boy.

$39?!?!?!?!? Our water bill for our house in El Yunque is just a little over that and the house is used, at most, once a month.

    Hmm… Worrisome.

Yikes! I hope you get it figured out quickly, and for not a lot more $$ out of pocket!

That sounds very bad – especially if you’ve been paying $39 since you moved in!!! Yikes. Praying you can get it cleared up – does the water company have English speaking operators???
