Libby Airlifted to Children’s Hospital

Posted November 12th, 2004 under Clara and Libby by ScottP.

At noon we found blood discharged in Libby’s stool. We immediately took her to the Bainbridge Island doctor. En route, she became listless and shallow of breath. The doctor immediately ordered an airlift to Children’s Hospital in Seattle. They didn’t allow us to ride in the helicopter.

I walked on the next ferry, and Michele drove home to get Mimi (Michele’s mom) and Clara. Carolyn (head of our local twins group on Bainbridge) was dropping off dinner and helped Michele get organized to go to the hospital. She also took our dogs to the kennel. What a blessing!

I arrived 10 minutes after Libby’s airlift landed so I didn’t get to see her immediately. I heard her crying and the staff assured me she was hanging in there. I love Children’s Hospital, it’s a blessing we’re here. Libby has been IV’d and intubated since had been forgetting to breathe for the previous hour. Her condition is life-threatening because her vitals have been so poor. However, there is no diagnosis yet. The doctor had just glanced at the XRays a few minutes ago and said he saw nothing immediately that alarmed him, so they continue testing blood and fluid from the spine to determine if she has infection. Michele got here a bit ago and we both got to spend time with Libby, talking to her and comforting her before the intubation. She REALLY responded to our voices and touch.

We covet your prayers. Being in the NICU again is so disarming, and we’re feeling beyond consolation right now. Lisa Espinosa from church showed up minutes ago and is with Mimi getting us something to eat. We ate breakfast, but that’s it. Pray that Michele can keep her strength and calmness as she cares for Clara in the meantime.
